A Wonderful Day in the Fjord
The day started with shy little bursts of rain, drifting in and out before finally deciding to stay with us. But this is Iceland, what would it be without a bit of rain? So, we welcomed it with a smile.
The fjord itself was completely calm, not a drop of wind, which made it easy to spot our favourite giants. Just south of the small town of Hjalteyri, we encountered two humpback whales taking turns surfacing for air. They stayed close, often lifting their tails gracefully, and seemed remarkably comfortable in our presence.
Whenever possible on the rib excursions, we cut the engine to minimise disturbances. Drifting in silence gave us the chance to appreciate their incredible beauty in a truly peaceful setting.
The fjord was a little quiet on the bird front today, but our faithful northern fulmars didn’t let us down. We spotted a small group near the hot-water waterfall, adding the perfect finishing touch to the day.
