Today began with a beautiful morning, clear blue skies, sunshine, and no wind at all. By the afternoon, the wind had picked up slightly and it became a bit cloudier, but the sea conditions remained excellent for whale watching in Eyjafjörður.
The morning was especially calm, with the sea looking like a mirror. We even spotted some Harbour porpoises, which were easy to see in the still water. However, we didn’t stop to watch them as they tend to be quite shy. Instead, we encountered a Humpback whale west of Svalbarðseyri. We spent some time with it and were treated to several views of its fluke, which was wonderful. Later, we headed further north, and just south of Hjalteyri we found a large group of seabirds diving for fish. Among them, we noticed a blow, it was another Humpback whale, actively feeding. While watching this one, we also saw another Humpback closer to the shore. To top it off, a Minke whale suddenly appeared in the same area! Although Minkes are elusive and difficult to photograph, it was exciting to see so much marine life in one trip.
In the afternoon we went back out to Hjalteyri where we had the Humpback Whales earlier in the day. We ended up with three different Humpback Whales but they where scattered around the fjord and where down for really long dives, up to 15 minutes at a time. The Minke whale from earlier today also came by and did a short guest appearance. When we were almost all the way back in Akureyri we suddenly came across the pod Northern Bottlenose whales that we have seen the last couple of days. We never know when they will show up and every time they do we feel really lucky.
