Morning Magic in the Fjord
With the moon still small and in its waxing phase, we set off under a cloudy sky, light rain falling, and low-hanging clouds giving a mystical feel to the mountains surrounding our precious fjord.
Adventure called—and nature answered right away! Just as we left the harbor, a great skua swooped in and stole a snack from a black-headed gull. Nature's drama in full swing!
We cruised northward, and near the southern tip of Hjalteyri, we spotted our first blow—rising like a giant geyser from the sea. Our first encounter: a young humpback whale, surfacing again and again, full of energy and curiosity!
A bit farther north, near the old herring factory, we met a humpback whale—this one much larger. It didn’t seem bothered by us at all, so we turned off the engine. It came in close—so close we could see the baleen in its upper jaw and the tubercles on its rostrum (tiny bumps wit at least one hair, reminders that whales are mammals too!)
Back to the harbor now to gear up for whatever the afternoon has in store!
This afternoon was just as special as the morning—slightly windier and with a bit more swell, but also a touch of sunshine. We spotted puffins in the fjord and once again found the two humpback whales, almost in the same spot as earlier today. One of them treated us to some tail slapping and powerful pectoral fin slaps on the water… wow!
During our midnight tour, we encountered the same 2 Humpbacks we have already been seeing throughout the day, just a touch further north. Still feeding at the surface and showing lots of tails.
More to come tomorrow—bigger and better!
