A Perfect Day on the Fjord – Whales, Birds, and a Show to Remember
Today was one of those days you never forget. We set out with calm seas — the fjord was like a mirror, almost like a lake. The weather was beautiful, with clear skies and a mild temperature of around 12°C. A perfect start.
Not long after we left the harbor, I noticed a few birds circling near us. There were Northern Fulmars gliding gracefully, and the sharp, quick movements of Arctic Terns darting around. Then, just as I was scanning the water, I noticed tiny dorsal fins breaking the surface — a small pod of harbour porpoises! About five individuals were all around us, gently swimming, curious and calm. It’s always a joy to see these shy creatures so close.
As I looked ahead, something larger caught my eye — a Minke whale feeding near the surface! We could clearly see the expanded ventral grooves as it lunged for fish, half of its body rising out of the water. It surfaced a few times, breathing peacefully before diving again to chase fish close to the surface. A calm and beautiful encounter.
But the day had more surprises in store.
Heading north, we spotted two distant spouts and decided to follow. What we found was magical — two friendly Humpback whales, with a third one visible further in the distance. These gentle giants swam near us, surfacing slowly, showing off their flukes.
And then — an unforgettable moment. As we were getting ready to head back to the harbor, one of the Humpbacks decided to put on a full show: breaching high out of the water, head-lunging, and even slapping its massive pectoral fins on the surface. What a spectacle! The guests on board were stunned. It felt like the whale was saying goodbye — and showing off its full beauty.
But the day wasn’t over yet. On our 17:00 tour, we were lucky once again. A hungry Minke whale reappeared, and we encountered five more Humpbacks — some of them very curious, coming close to the boat. The people at the front even got a face full of whale spout — they can now proudly say they were kissed by a whale!
And just when we thought we had seen it all — more breaching, tail slaps, and playful behavior in the afternoon light. It was truly a magical day out at sea.
I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.
