Today, June 17th, is Iceland's National Day. The morning started off cloudy, and the sea was incredibly calm, like a mirror. As the day progressed into the afternoon, we got some rain and the wind picked up slightly, creating a few gentle waves, but overall the sea remained calm.
During the morning tour, we spotted a Humpback Whale near the Green buoy. While we were observing it, a Minke Whale appeared in the same area, adding to the excitement. Later, we headed further north and near Hjalteyri we encountered another Humpback Whale. This one was particularly curious and approached our boat, giving us a fantastic close-up experience. As an extra treat, we also saw three Puffin birds, beautiful seabirds that always bring joy. We don’t have a puffin colony in the fjord but sometimes they are here and we are lucky enough to see them.
In the afternoon, we went out again despite a bit of rain. The weather didn’t stop us, and we were lucky to come across some very active Humpback Whales in the same area than in the morning. One even surprised us with a breach, unfortunately, we didn’t get any photos, but it was an unforgettable moment. We also witnessed tail slapping behavior that went on for quite some time, possibly as a form of communication. It was a wonderful and memorable tour.
During the late afternoon tour, we encountered a Humpback Whale near the Green buoy. At first, it was surfacing quietly, just taking a breath before diving again. Soon after, another Humpback Whale appeared, and the two began interacting and spending time together. It was a lovely moment with their calm and curious behavior. Later, as we continued searching, we spotted another Humpback Whale near Hjalteyri, actively feeding with its mouth full, an impressive sight to end the tour.
