The day started with some clouds but not much wind or swell. In the afternoon the wind and swell picked up quite a bit but that did not stop the Humpback Whales from giving us unforgettable encounters throughout the day.
In the morning we had at least five Humpback Whales feeding north of Svalbarðseyri. They were moving really slowly, completely focused on hunting their fish, and showing the flukes multiple times. More then once the whales got really close to our boat, we even got a shower of the whale’s breath because it came up so close to us. We could just turn off the engine and marvel. We also got accompanied by a pod of Harbour Porpoise that was curious enough to come close once the engine was turned off. We also saw one or two Minke Whales in the distance.
In the afternoon the swell had picked up making it hard to see the Harbour Porpoise again, but the Humpback Whales was still around the same area and had only move a bit more north, east of the green bouy. They continued to move around the area, busy feeding, and showing their flukes before going for deeper dives. More then once they got really close to our boats. We also had one Humpback Whale doing tail slapping on the surface.
We hope they will still be here tomorrow. Time will tell.
