Today we started with a temperature of 3 degrees and a slightly choppy fjord. Due to the high temperature, it was even raining a little bit on and off. Despite the weather, it didn’t take long to spot a blow. Just N of DTK, we spotted our 1st Humpback whale. It surfaced a couple of times, but after it disappeared as a ghost. But in the distance, we had already spotted 1 More Humpback whale by Svalbarðseyri. Our next sighting was a quite sneaky Minke whale, but we quickly got distracted by the Humpback, who was feeding around the boat until suddenly a trompet noise alerted us to the presence of a group of 3 more Humpbacks. It looked like one of the whales was showing its belly to the one who trumpeted, which resulted in the separation of the group, leaving only 2 of the Humpback whales together. And then… Bam! An amazing display of head lunging, pectoral fins slapping, and breaching occurred, leaving all of us breathless. Today was most definitely the best day of December.
