Our morning tour started with beautiful summer conditions in Eyjafjörður. The sun was shining, the sea was calm, and a light southerly wind was blowing through the fjord.
We did not have to sail far before reaching the waters south of Hjalteyri. There, we soon discovered what we had been hoping for: two Humpback Whales, Disy and Shadow, feeding in the area.
Both whales were feeding close to the green buoy, in a shallow area influenced by the nearby Svarfaðardalsá river. The river carries nutrient-rich freshwater from melting snow and ice in the surrounding volcanic mountains into Eyjafjörður, helping create productive feeding grounds for marine life.
Seeing two humpback whales feeding so close together is always special, but watching their powerful fluking and dives in such shallow water made this encounter even more memorable.
With sunshine overhead, a gentle South wind behind us and two humpback whales putting on a spectacular natural show, it was a fantastic morning out on Eyjafjörður. The afternoon proved even more special with the appearance of a third mystery Humpback Whale ! Alongside the humpies we found lovely Minkes on the afternoon tour.
