Officially the second day of summer!
It might not seem like it, with this light drizzle in the air, but temperature is pleasant and the sea looks like a clam, welcoming lake.
the recent rainfall has slightly altered the surface water density, creating an halocline (layers of water with different salinity) that plankton cannot cross -this explains the many birds spotted and the abundance of jellyfish floating at the surface ;)
We had barely left the harbor when we encountered our first Humpback whale, so close to the boat that it really seemed our presence did not bother it at all.
After some fantastic views of the tail and the hump, we headed South West of Svalbarðseyri, where we spotted the second humpback whale: it is Disy, a well known female, who was enjoying a good feast alongside the Artic Terns!
We returned to the harbor after a quick stop at our favorite hot spring waterfall; full of excitement for what the rest of the day is bringing…
The afternoon tours were just as incredible as the morning, if not more so. At one point, North East from Svalbarðseyri we found ourselves completely surrounded by Humpback whales on all sides of the boat, leaving us wide-eyed and slack-jawed in awe. The weather held perfectly, and the encounters were nothing short of magical. Tomorrow promises more… and maybe even better, if that’s possible.
