We headed out in the afternoon under a sunny sky — a perfect day for sailing. The weather was absolutely stunning, with clear blue skies and calm waters that looked more like a lake than the ocean. These are the kind of conditions we love the most, because with such stillness, you can spot every little movement on the surface.

As we cruised along, we saw plenty of bird activity. Long-tailed ducks, guillemots, and black-headed gulls were all flying around us, adding to the lively atmosphere. Then, not long after, we noticed small dorsal fins gently popping up from the water — it was a group of harbour porpoises! A small family swimming peacefully together. We stopped for a little while just to enjoy the moment and watch them before continuing our journey north.

Before long, we spotted a larger blow and the back of a bigger cetacean — a minke whale! It surfaced a few times, took a few breaths, then arched its body and disappeared back into the deep blue. Magical. As the boat gently drifted, I shared some stories about these amazing whales with our guests. Nearby, a few northern fulmars floated calmly beside the boat, seemingly listening too — or at least enjoying the sun with us.

I told everyone about an old Icelandic belief: that when fishermen pass away, their souls enter the bodies of northern fulmars. So who knows... maybe it wasn’t just the birds listening to my stories, but some fishermen too.

Soon after, the minke whale surfaced again — what a beautiful sight to see them back in the fjord. Not long after that, another one appeared, and suddenly we had two minke whales around the boat! We stayed with them for a while, soaking in the peacefulness of the moment.

As the afternoon went on, we continued heading north in hopes of spotting more. And sure enough, we came across more groups of harbour porpoises and even another minke whale. It truly was a day filled with wildlife and wonder.

We’re already looking forward to tomorrow, hoping for more encounters with these incredible creatures.
